When does an activity need an environmental permit in Finland?
An environmental permit is required for activities posing a risk of environmental pollution listed in Annex 1 to the Environmental Protection Act, and in the situations named separately in the Act, such as discharging waste water or the risk of nuisance to neighbours. The permit is applied for before the activity starts and for any material change, and the permit authority is the Regional State Administrative Agency or the municipal environmental protection authority, depending on the annex. The permit sets conditions on emissions, noise, waste, monitoring and reporting.
