Which environmental claims are prohibited in French advertising?
An environmental claim is prohibited where it rests on false statements or statements liable to mislead about the qualities of the product or the scope of the advertiser's commitments. Stating that a product or service is carbon neutral, or any equivalent wording, is prohibited unless the advertiser makes public an emissions inventory, the reduction pathway and how residual emissions are offset. A breach is a misleading commercial practice and carries a fine of up to 300,000 euros, raised to 80 per cent of the cost of the campaign.
