When is board approval needed for a renovation?

Approval is required for work on load-bearing structures, changes to drainage, heating, gas or water installations, and other substantial alterations of the flat. Without approval the right of use may be forfeited.

  • Chapter 7 section 7: approval is required for load-bearing work and for changes to installations.
  • Chapter 7 section 7: the board may refuse only where the work causes significant harm or nuisance to the association.
  • Chapter 7 section 18: substantial alteration without approval may lead to forfeiture of the right of use.

Ask for the approval in writing and keep the drawings, they show what was approved.

For the tenant, buyer or client

The board must assess the application on the merits, a refusal requires significant harm or nuisance.
