Denna lag gäller, med de inskränkningar som anges i 2 §, varje verksamhet där arbetstagare utför arbete för en arbetsgivares räkning.
Allmänna skyddsbestämmelser av betydelse för förläggningen av arbetstid finns i 2 kap. 1 § arbetsmiljölagen (1977:1160). Särskilda bestämmelser om arbetstiden för minderåriga finns i 5 kap. den lagen. Lag (1996:360).
