    Carbon footprint declaration

    Covered batteries must carry a carbon footprint declaration per functional unit, calculated over the life cycle by the Commission's method and verified by a notified body. The declaration states manufacturer, battery model, plant and the footprint split by life cycle stage, and must be available via QR code. Later steps add performance classes and thresholds.

    Example A traction battery maker publishes 61 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per kilowatt hour, split across raw materials, production and end of life, referencing the notified body's report.

    Due diligence policy for the raw material chain

    Whoever places batteries on the market must operate a due diligence policy for the cobalt, natural graphite, lithium and nickel chain, with a management system, risk management, independent third-party verification and public reporting. The policy must follow recognised international guidance and be kept current. It covers both purchased and self-extracted raw materials.

    Example A vehicle maker has an independent party audit the cobalt chain at two refineries and publishes a remediation plan for a mine where child labour risk was found.

    Digital battery passport

    Every covered battery must carry a digital battery passport with a unique identifier, reachable through a data carrier on the battery. The passport holds composition, capacity, state of health, recycled content and end-of-life handling, shared in access tiers between the public, operators and authorities. Accuracy and currency rest with the party placing the battery on the market.

    Example A workshop scans the QR code on an end-of-life vehicle battery, sees 74 percent state of health, and routes it to reuse in stationary storage rather than material recycling.
