Bookkeeping and annual reports for a small Swedish company

The bookkeeping duty applies to every business from the first transaction, records must be kept for seven years, and a limited company must also prepare and file an annual report after each financial year.

What the rules say

  • The Bookkeeping Act: continuous recording, vouchers and a systematic presentation.
  • The Bookkeeping Act: records are kept for seven years after the end of the calendar year in which the financial year ended.
  • The Annual Accounts Act: the annual report consists of a balance sheet, income statement, notes and a directors' report.

What it means for the company

Filing late is expensive. The company risks late fees and ultimately compulsory liquidation, and the board carries the duty to file on time.

What it means for the individual

A sole trader usually needs only a simplified year-end account, but the voucher and seven-year retention rules are the same.
