Requirements in the text

  • Artikel 6

    Packaging must be recyclable

Packaging must be designed for recycling and is assessed against the criteria and performance grades the regulation sets. Packaging below the lowest grade may not be placed on the market after the stated date. The design must allow material separation in practice, not only in theory.

Example A beverage producer replaces a multilayer label that disrupts PET recycling with a single-layer label, after the performance assessment placed the old solution below the lowest grade.

  • Artikel 7

    Minimum recycled content

Plastic packaging must contain a minimum share of recycled content, calculated per packaging type and manufacturing plant as an annual average. The share differs between contact-sensitive packaging and other packaging, and steps up at the stated dates. The share must be evidenced in the technical documentation.

Example A packaging supplier documents 32 percent recycled PET in its soft drink bottles through mass balance certificates per plant and calendar year.
