Textiles and apparel

Textiles sit at the intersection of four regimes: fibre composition labelling, the REACH restrictions on dyes and finishing chemicals, general product safety with an EU responsible person, and the ecodesign requirements with the digital product passport that the EU textiles strategy brings in. Buyers add the due diligence questionnaire on top, because it is their statutory duty rather than their preference.

• Label the fibre composition to the Textile Labelling Regulation, using the prescribed names and the language of the Member State of sale.
• Screen dyes, azo colourants, chromium VI and per- and polyfluorinated substances against the REACH restrictions before production, not at inspection.
• Appoint the EU responsible person and put the traceability elements on the article, as GPSR requires for consumer goods.
• Prepare for the ecodesign delegated act for textiles: durability, recycled content, fibre-to-fibre recyclability and the product passport data set.
• Have the social audit evidence ready in the form an EU buyer must be able to reference in its own due diligence and reporting.
