Ecodesign and the digital product passport

How does an Indian manufacturer meet EU ecodesign requirements?

Answer

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation replaces the old energy-focused framework with product requirements on durability, reparability, recycled content, energy and resource efficiency, and it introduces the digital product passport. The requirements bite per product group through delegated acts, so the practical question is which product group your goods fall into and when its act applies.

What has to be done

  • Identify the product group and the delegated act that will govern it, and read the transition date rather than the framework date.
  • Design against the parameters the act sets: durability, reparability, spare parts availability, recycled content and energy efficiency.
  • Prepare the digital product passport data set and the carrier for it, and keep it available for the whole period the act requires.
  • Where energy labelling applies, register the model in the EPREL database before placing the product on the market.
  • Do not destroy unsold consumer goods where the regulation prohibits it, and be ready to disclose the volumes discarded.
