CE marking for Indian manufacturers

CE marking is not a certificate and no body issues a general CE approval. It is a declaration by the manufacturer that the product meets every piece of applicable Union harmonisation legislation. The manufacturer signs it and the manufacturer carries the liability, even where the goods are made in India and sold by an EU importer.

• Establish which directives and regulations apply: one product commonly falls under general product safety, electromagnetic compatibility, radio equipment, low voltage, ecodesign and batteries at the same time.
• Compile the technical documentation and keep it for ten years; the EU responsible person must be able to produce it on request.
• Sign the EU declaration of conformity and list each legal act and harmonised standard relied on, item by item.
• Involve a notified body only where the applicable act requires it; for most electronics, self-assessment against harmonised standards is the route.
• Products with digital elements also carry the essential cybersecurity requirements of the Cyber Resilience Act; leaving them out invalidates the declaration.
